Abstract
‘10,000 Steps Northland’ is a physical activity programme run by Sport Northland and a range of partners. The programme (originally known as Stepping Out) has proven to be very popular, with a number of spin-offs resulting from its success. Perhaps the most significant of these have been improved regional collaboration and some new initiatives.
This case study first takes a brief look at some of the reasons for the success of ‘10,000 Steps Northland’ and then focuses on the spin-offs. These include a range of projects, some marketed under the ‘10,000 Steps Northland’ brand, and others larger in scope.
Examples of new initiatives branded as part of ‘10,000 Steps Northland’ include Disc Golf and Active Workplaces. Larger, collaborative regional partnerships that have developed or progressed as a result of the success of ‘10,000 Steps Northland’ include:
Northland Sport and Physical Activity Strategy (NSPAS)
- Northland Intersectoral Forum (NIF)
- Taitamariki Tuu Ora – an initiative aimed at engaging young Maori people in dance, krumping, and traditional forms of Maori physical activity.
