Abstract

In this chapter, the authors consider: the increased role of globalisation and its impact on sport, culture and identity in New Zealand; theories of globalisation that help explain the transformation of sport in New Zealand; related and alternative explanations of globalisation, such as Americanisation and cultural imperialism; the role of the global media in transforming sports and influencing local cultures to re-define or re-create themselves; and considerations that a new global environment creates for sports managers, marketing professionals and policymakers.
