Abstract
This report, was developed to support an upcoming series of strategic planning exercise being led by the Department of Conservation in the Tongariro Whanganui Taranaki Conservancy. It outlines the key trends affecting recreation and tourism both nationally and in the region.
Five broad topics with short and long term effects on recreation and tourism are discussed in the report. These are
· International tourism,
· Domestic tourism
· Visitation to public conservation land in the Tongariro Whanganui Taranaki region
· New Zealanders’ participation in outdoor recreation
· Demographic change at national and local level.
Each section covers the major sources of relevant information and draws on publically available data, such as national tourism data sets, along with other information held by the Department of Conservation.
